As a Product Development Engineer at Mips, you will play a vital role in developing, testing, and refining new products and technical solutions, contributing directly to the future of helmet safety.
The Role
As a Product development engineer at Mips, you are responsible for the engineering execution of helmet products and subsystems. You work together with a strong team from other R&D groups, such as, Science, Virtual Test Lab, Advanced Concepts and Implementation.
You own the mechanical design, system integration, performance, and compliance of the solution throughout development.
Projects may range from full helmet systems to rotational impact protection solutions or other critical helmet components and subsystems. The role spans all helmet categories, including but not limited to cycling, motorcycling, snow sports, industrial safety, and other protective headgear.
You ensure that the engineered solution meets all functional, safety, thermal, and manufacturing requirements and performs reliably in testing and real-world use.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the mechanical design and engineering realization of full helmets, rotational protection systems, or other helmet components based on established concepts and industrial design intent
- Design, integrate, and validate all relevant subsystems, including Mips solutions, shells, liners, retention systems, padding, ventilation features, and customer-specific accessories.
- Ensure products meet all structural, functional, thermal, regulatory, and durability requirements across applicable helmet categories
- Understand and evaluate FEM/FEA analyses for impact behavior, energy absorption, deformation, and structural robustness
- Use CFD simulations/results to analyze and optimize airflow, ventilation performance, and heat management where applicable
- Correlate simulation results with physical testing, supporting test planning, failure analysis, and iterative design improvements
- Ensure designs are compatible with intended manufacturing and assembly processes, including injection molding and high-volume production
- Act as the technical owner when addressing test deviations, requirement conflicts, and integration challenges
- Maintain structured documentation of requirements, analyses, design decisions, and verification results
- Support certification and standards compliance across relevant helmet regulations
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Development, Engineering Physics, or a related field
- Several years of experience in mechanical design and product development
- Experience in helmet development is highly meritorious
It is also meritorious if you have experience of:
- FEM/FEA analysis
- CFD for airflow and heat transfer analysis
- plastics and injection-molded components
Personal Attributes
- Analytical and structured, with strong engineering judgment
- Able to balance safety performance, design intent, and manufacturability
- Comfortable working in cross-functional and international teams
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken; Swedish is a plus
